Amnis Nihili: Christological escalation
08/03/12 || gk
Amnis Nihili is a relatively new black metal band from Greece and this is the bands debut EP released last year. This 3 piece, fronted by Panos of the awesome Dephosphorus play an uncompromising but also vaguely experimental style of black metal. The songs go through a variety of moods, from the opening song, “Christological Escalation” with its dissonant and razor sharp riffing to “Wandering Amongst Ruins and Ash” which starts off sounding like classic Norwegian black metal before going on to add dissonant riffs, samples, spoken word and a relentless drum machine to lift the song onto a completely different level. “Radiation” is a feedback drenched instrumental that provides some calm before the EP closes with “Infamous Judeochristian Seed” which reminds me a bit of Inquisition at the start but has this weird mechanical sounding second half and atmospheric interlude that just sets it apart. The songs while being harsh, dissonant and noisy are also quite original and Panos’ vocals are pretty great here. His voice is a bit more raspy and thin sounding than in Dephosphorus and the result is quite extreme and captivating. This is a band to really keep an eye on and if you’re interested at all in black metal, then Amnis Nihili should definitely be on your radar.
